Profile: Henderson Arena & The
Henderson Family - Jerry Henderson started trading
horses as a young boy. Word got around and people would come to
the farm to buy and trade horses. Every week he would travel to
Rushville, IN to get a load of horses, bring them back and sell or trade
them. He also started selling tack to the new horse owners. Jerry still operates out of the same barn, next to
Henderson's Tack and Feed store. Beverly grew up in West Virginia
and was always interested in horses. Bev rode with the Royal
Lipizzan Stallion Show for several years where she had the opportunity
to travel and ride with several dressage and Olympic trainers. She
met Jerry at a horse sale and soon after, moved to Ohio. Joyce, started
working there in 1982. We all know Joyce from the concession
stand! Jerry and Bevs daughter Beth Henderson Vallery, grew up
with horses and ponies. Beth started in 4-H and then moved on to
AQHA shows. She showed primarily in western pleasure and all
around events. Every month when there was a reining show at
Henderson's, Beth would take her pleasure horse to a show somewhere
else. Rick Ramsey would always tease her about showing pleasure
horses. As she graduated from the youth division she though about
trying reining. Her mom had a horse called Trash A Smoking and
that became Beth's first reiner. She went to trainer Don Boyd for
a lesson and after a few lessons, she was hooked! In 1994, Jerry
and Bev purchased the property where the arena is now. The
following year, Rick Ramsey and Dan Clarke approached the Henderson's
about having NRHA shows at their place. The first show was held in
June of 1995. At the time, there was only the outside arena to
show in and the stalls were literally built as the horses came in.
From that point, other shows were booked in a variety of events, more
stalls were built, the indoor was built, the covered warm-up area was
built and now we have Henderson Arena as we all know it! Not only
do they offer a tack and feed store a couple of miles down the road,
there is one located inside the arena, and Henderson's Western Wear is
at the entrance of the facility. One of the most popular things at
Henderson's is the concession stand! Home cooked meals, pies,
cakes, cookies....nobody goes hungry there! The entire Henderson
family has always been a HUGE supporter of OVRHA. They built a
wonderful facility that we are able to have first rate shows at.
They try to accommodate us in any way possible. Next time you see
Jerry, Bev, Beth or Joyce, be sure to thank them for their continued
support of our club.
